Five more test positive - Sault Star

Article content

Algoma Public Health reports five new cases of COVID-19, all from Sault Ste. Marie and area.

Four caught the virus via close contact. It’s unknown how the other person contracted COVID-19, APH said Tuesday evening.

All are self-isolating

This brings the total number of Algoma District confirmed cases to 373 since March 2020. APH says there are currently 30 active cases, with one hospitalization. There have been four deaths.

The health unit says 80 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Algoma have screened positive for a variant of concern (VOC). As of March 22, all COVID-19 positive specimens are tested for the N501Y and E484K mutations. The presence of either or both of these mutations indicates that a VOC is present.

Ontario reported 1,616 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday and 17 more deaths. The data was based on over 22,900 completed tests.

The Ministry of Health said there were 1,484 people are in hospital with the virus, including 764 in intensive care.

The province remains under a stay-at-home order but Elliott said Tuesday that the government was developing an economic reopening plan that would be released “very soon.”
