One bystander was bitten by a police dog Saturday afternoon during the arrest of five suspects wanted for crimes in Calgary and Chestermere.

The injury occurred in the parking lot of the Calgary Zoo around 1:30 p.m., where the suspects had just exited a stolen vehicle used in connection with two robberies, according to the Calgary Police Service.

“Two police service dogs were deployed to apprehend the five fleeing suspects,” the service said in a statement issued late Saturday.

“One dog was successful in an immediate apprehension. In the process of chasing one of the suspects, the other dog contacted a bystander leading to a bite injury.”

The police dog’s handler went to the aid of the bystander, who was later taken to hospital for treatment of soft tissue injuries.

Saturday’s incident was sparked by a robbery at Ace Liquor, 3525 26th Ave. S.E., reported around 12:30 p.m.

Police say the robbery suspects fled in a stolen vehicle heading toward Chestermere.

Chestermere RCMP Const. Patrick Lambert said officers were called to the Shoppers Drug Mart around 1 p.m. for a weapons and robbery investigation.

A HAWCS helicopter was used to track the vehicle as it returned to Calgary and briefly headed toward Airdrie before eventually turning back.

Earlier Saturday, Calgary police Sgt. Duane Lepchuk said based on vehicle and suspect descriptions, it was believed both robberies were carried out by the same individuals, who threatened store staff with pepper spray.

“The police helicopter was able to pick up the vehicle, follow it to the zoo parking lot, where five offenders got out of the vehicle and fled and were all taken into custody,” said Lepchuk.

Police were not searching for any further suspects and charges are pending, he added.
