Jesse Oshell, deputy chief with Greater Sudbury Fire Services, said crews responded mid-morning to the blaze at the north end of Stanley Street, west of Beatty Street.
“There were reports of smoke from one unit of a five-unit apartment complex,” he said. “Residents were at home and in other units, but fortunately none were hurt.”
Some family pets were affected, however, and had to be rescued and provided oxygen.
“Firefighters did remove them from the residence,” he said. “We applied pet oxygen to them, but I’m not sure of their outcome.”
The deputy chief said the fire was contained to the one unit on the second floor, and crews were able to control and extinguish it in fairly short order.
“There is certainly smoke damage to other units but no fire damage,” he said.
Oshell said the fire department worked with Red Cross to find alternative accommodations for the family members who were displaced, and will continue to investigate the fire.
“At this point the cause is undetermined,” he said.
