Most vaccine-hesitant Americans believe the government is using the COVID jab to inject microchips used to track people, a new poll found.

The survey included responses from 1,500 adult U.S. citizens interviewed online between July 10 and 13, and was weighted to represent the national population.

“Most Americans reject these (conspiracy) theories, but only minorities of those who oppose their vaccinations do,” the authors write. “Nearly one in three say they aren’t sure what to believe.”

Vaccination rates in the U.S. seem to be highly influenced by politics. The Republican-dominated states of Alabama and Mississippi have the lowest number of fully vaccinated people, at 34 per cent each. By contrast, two states with majority Democrats, Vermont and Massachusetts, have the highest proportion of fully vaccinated people, at 67 and 63 per cent, respectively.

As the Delta variant surges — accounting for 83 per cent of all U.S. COVID cases — states with the lowest vaccination percentage are reporting the highest rates of infection. In Alabama, 39 per cent of COVID tests are returning positive, a 20 per cent jump from a week ago, according to Johns Hopkins data. Conversely, in Vermont, the positivity rate is close to one per cent, the data shows.

The poll found that 90 per cent of the vaccine hesitant fear the side effects more than COVID-19 itself. Only 16 per cent of them believed the cases were more prevalent among the unvaccinated.

In a further sign of polarization, while two thirds of vaccinated people thought most of those who are unvaccinated have no good reasoning for refusing the jab, among Republicans, 44 per cent said that vaccine hesitancy was largely unwarranted (with 36 per cent opposed), whereas 77 per cent of Democrats and 60 per cent of independents agreed.

“The skepticism about the threats posed by the coronavirus is clear among vaccine rejectors,” the pollsters write. “While more than one in four of those fully vaccinated believe the dangers of COVID-19 were exaggerated for political reasons, three times as many vaccine rejectors say that is the case.”
