'Birds welcome five talented recruits to women's field hockey - UBC Thunderbirds

The UBC Thunderbirds are excited to welcome five student-athletes to the storied women's field hockey program for the 2021 season.
 
UBC leads the Canada West with 25 all-time conference titles, while also securing a national best 19 U SPORTS national championships throughout the decorated history of women's field hockey in the blue and gold.

Former T-Bird captain and six-time U SPORTS champion, Poonam Sandhu, is entering her fourth season as head coach of the Thunderbirds and is thrilled to add five new players to the upcoming roster.

Lize Huibregtsen is a defender from Haarlem, the Netherlands who joins the 'Birds after captaining her U-18 squad for two years in the National League.
 
"We are very excited to welcome Lize to our program as she is a strong defender with an experienced approach to the game," said Sandhu. "She has a strong passion for field hockey and is a keen student looking to pursue engineering."
 
West Vancouver's Liz Mathisen is coming off three consecutive provincial championships in high school and will study Biomedical Engineering.
 
"Liz comes to us from Collingwood Secondary as an emerging midfielder," said Sandhu. "We're very excited to see how she uses her speed, skill and calm demeanor in the upcoming season. Liz is an all-around powerhouse as she also pursues engineering at UBC."
 
Little Flower Academy graduate Mikayla Stelling joins the 'Birds after spending time with the Field Hockey Canada Junior Women's National Team and winning nationals with Team B.C.
 
"Mikayla has proven herself to be a strong recruit from Vancouver as a midfield/forward with great tenacity, grit and skill. We look forward to what she will be able to accomplish on the field with the Thunderbirds, and in the faculty of Kinesiology."

North Vancouver's Kaia Cooper played with the West Vancouver Field Hockey club prior to committing to UBC.
 
"Kaia is a gifted midfielder. We were blown away with her tactical strength and understanding of the game. We are excited to see Kaia enter the Thunderbird family as she has a lot of strengths to add to our program and to the faculty of Kinesiology."
 
Ishaval Sekhon is a goalkeeper from Surrey, B.C. who played with the U17 National Team and Team B.C.
 
"Ishavel joined the Thunderbirds in January 2021 as a new recruit. She will be entering her first season as an up-and-coming goalkeeper in the Canadian system. Ishavel has proven to be an incredibly gifted goaltender using both her athletic abilities and tactical knowledge to her advantage."
 


Canada West field hockey returns with a new tournament style look opening Friday, October 1st through Sunday, October 3rd in Victoria while the first chance to see the T-Birds on home soil comes during the second round robin tournament weekend beginning Friday, October 22 through Sunday, October 24. The 'Birds open play on October, 22 with an 11:00 a.m. game against the Calgary Dinos. 

The 2021 campaign wraps up with the U SPORTS Women's Field Hockey Championship scheduled for November 11-14th.
