Stinson wins fourth Lakepoint Pro-Am in five years, over $26K raised for Women's Resource Society - Energeticcity.ca

“The reason [Lakepoint] got involved with the Vancouver Golf Tour was so that they could get some more pros up here because I think they were struggling to get enough pros to come out,” explained Betz. “By making it a Tour event, they bring a lot of the guys up. If we had 18 guys in the field, 12 would be Vancouver Golf Tour pros, and 6 would be local pros.”

Betz says the event is almost like a three-headed monster.

“Some people view it as a Vancouver Golf Tour event, some view it as a charity fundraiser, and some view it as the Lakepoint Pro-Am. The main thrust of the program is to raise funds for the local community.”

The charity event puts three amateur golfers in a group with a professional, and they compete as a foursome in a Stableford Points Format. The proceeds of the event get invested back into the community.

“Obviously, pros had to play their own ball and post their score, but for the team side, it was all four balls counted in Stableford points. So the pro is playing individually and as part of the team. It makes everybody engaged and on the same team.”

With both professionals and amateurs competing on the same course, Betz says they didn’t firm up the greens to tournament levels.

“We didn’t firm it up, but the pin placements were a little tricky. That was the only defense. We’ve had some intermittent rains so the course last week wasn’t burnt out at all. It was really receptive.”

The team competition winners were Wonowon Water Services.

The recipient of more than $26,000 raised from this year’s Pro-Am is the Women’s Resource Society.

With a solid two months of good golfing weather, Betz says there’s plenty of time to get out and enjoy the course.

“August and September are still full-on golf season here.”
