'Birds add length and depth with five new recruits - University of British Columbia Athletics - UBC Thunderbirds

With the 2021-2022 Canada West season right around the corner, the UBC women's basketball team is thrilled to welcome five new recruits from across Canada to the storied Thunderbirds program.

The incoming talent bring with them an intriguing mix of backcourt versatility, defensive tenacity and scoring ability. The newcomers to the blue and gold include Olivia Weekes, Katie Hartman, Ryann Kristmanson, Teigan Manson and Sofia Bergman

"I'm looking forward to seeing how this year's recruit group will make an impact on the court," said newly minted UBC head coach Erin McAleenan. "I'm intrigued by the length we have across the board, as well as the different skill sets from each of the young women. They are all hard-working young women who will add depth to our roster and as they adapt to our pace will assuredly contribute on the court."

Olivia Weekes

Weekes, a 5-foot-11 guard from Winnipeg, Manitoba, was named MVP of all five high school tournaments she competed in during the 2019-2020 season. The Vincent Massey Collegiate grad was ranked the No. 2 player in the province, selected as a league all-star, and named to the Manitoba Provincial Team in her final season of high school basketball. The Kinesiology student uses her length and size to her advantage on defense, while also being able to post up when needed on offence – in addition to possessing quickness on both ends of the floor.

Katie Hartman

Hartman is a 5-foot-10 guard from Oakville, Ontario who prides herself on being an intense, defensive minded player who leaves everything on the court. The King's Christian Collegiate grad will study Commerce at the UBC Sauder School of Business while suiting up for the T-Birds.

Ryann Kristmanson WBB recruit 2021

Adding more backcourt depth is Whistler, B.C.'s Kristmanson a 6-foot guard and honour roll student from Argyle Secondary School who will provide a great work rate and high basketball IQ to the T-Birds while pursuing a degree in Media Studies.

Sophia Bergman

Bergman is a 6-foot-1 power forward from North Vancouver who joins the 'Birds after most recently spending time with the Western Mustangs. The Sociology student is a hard worker who prides herself on a strong defensive and rebounding ability.

Rounding out the incoming recruits is Richmond Hill, Ontario's Manson add further versatility to the floor with the ability to play multiple positions as a guard/forward who stands 5-foot-11. Mason is an aggressive defender who can also knock down shots and she'll study Kinesiology at UBC.

The Thunderbirds open the season by hosting the Trinity Western Spartans on Thursday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m. followed up two days later by a visit from the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday, October 30 with a 5:00 p.m. tip off at War Memorial Gym.
