Blue Demons Notch Five Singles Wins at Purdue Fall Invite - DePaul Blue Demons

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – DePaul certainly looked more like the defending BIG EAST champion men's tennis team on Sunday.

Coach Matt Brothers' team finished up strong at the Purdue Fall Invite, winning five of seven singles matches against IUPUI.

Tripp Tuff set the tone with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Emil Jankowski, and Lars Peder Minsaas followed suit after a 7-6(5), 6-4 decision over Alex Jochim.

Freshmen Leon Huck, Matteo Iaquinto and Sven Moser all came home with smiles on their faces. Huck bested Blessing Benibo 7-5, 6-2 while Iaquinto took down Kamil Kozerski 7-6(5), 6-2.

This is a young, talented team, and it's anybody's guess how high the ceiling could go. Just imagine, Sunday's stellar performance came without the two highest-rated Blue Demons, ITA Preseason No. 97 Vito Tonejc and highly regarded freshman Marino Jakic.

They were acquitting themselves well at the challenging Milwaukee Tennis Classic against some of the top competition in the country.

In Sunday's consolation bracket, Tonejc won his quarterfinal matchup 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 over Cleveland State's Maxime Moreschal-Hay. In the semifinals, Tonejc ran out of gas in a 6-4, 6-3 setback to Nick Lagaev of Power Five Conference school Arizona.

After advancing to the consolation quarterfinals, Jakic came up short 6-2, 6-4 to Jordan Hasson of Power Five school Oklahoma. Playing an extra match, Jakic ended on a winning note with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Arizona's Herman Hoeyeraal.

Overcoming an opponent from a Power Five school should give the newcomer Jakic confidence heading into the rest of the fall tournament season.

Tonejc and Jakic will rejoin their teammates next weekend at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. Brothers will be able to more accurately assess the strength of his team with all hands on deck.
