Dragons Run Unbeaten Streak to Five With Win Against UMass Lowell - Drexel Dragons

PHILADELPHIA - Melissa Lyons, Kailey Horton, and Delaney Lappin each found the back of the net as the Drexel women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 3-1 win against the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Sunday.

Drexel responded from an early UMass Lowell goal as Melissa Lyons curled a ball under the crossbar and inside the far post on a free kick from the left side of the box in the 24th minute. The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until the 39th minute when Anna Salvucci collected a loose ball at midfield and sprinted down the right side. She slipped the ball through the defense to Horton who measured her steps and buried the ball in the lower right corner, putting the Dragons up 2-1.

DU put the match away late. After persistent chances throughout the second half, Drexel took possession off a turnover in the 79th minute. Lappin received a ball in space, made a move to elude a defender, and ripped a shot into the top left corner from just beyond the top of the box, cementing the final score.

Overall, the Dragons outpaced the River Hawks in shots 25-8, including 12-4 in attempts on target DU also had eight corners to four for UML.

Drexel faces a stern challenge in its next contest, as it travels to No. 9 Rutgers on Thursday, September 16. Opening tap from Piscataway, N.J. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
