EOHU adds five COVID-19 cases to running total - Standard Freeholder

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit’s Friday afternoon COVID-19 update added six cases within SDG and removed one from Cornwall, for an overall increase of five cases since Thursday.

Two new cases were added in South Stormont, one in North Glengarry, and three in South Glengarry. The EOHU’s cumulative total of cases now sits at 4,966.

About 20 cases were set as resolved from Thursday to Friday, leading to a decrease in active caseload of 15; the EOHU reported 68 active cases within the region Friday. There are 15 active cases in Cornwall, three in the northern portion of Akwesasne, three in South Glengarry, two in North Glengarry, two in North Stormont, 10 in South Stormont, four in South Dundas, one in Russell, one in Casselman, four in The Nation, four in Hawkesbury, two in Champlain, one in Alfred & Plantagenet, and 16 in Clarence-Rockland.

There was a decrease of one person being treated in hospital since Thursday, that number now sitting at two— one of whom remains in the critical care unit at the Cornwall Community Hospital. The number of related fatalities remains stable at 112.

The Ontario data updated Friday morning captured many of the cases the EOHU had reported on Thursday, assigning an additional 21 to the health unit, with a cumulative total of 4,848.

Looking at the 72 cases added to the Ontario data from Sept. 3-10, 26 of them (36.1 per cent) were among those under the age of 20; 16 were in their 20s (22.2 per cent); 10 were in their 30s (13.9 per cent); nine were in their 40s (12.5 per cent); and, 11 were 50 and older (15.3 per cent). Looking at acquisition information, 52 cases are listed as being contact with a confirmed case (72.2 per cent); one as outbreak-related; one as travel-related; and, 13 have no known link to another confirmed case (18 per cent). There are five cases with no information on acquisition available.

The Standard-Freeholder continues to track and aggregate local COVID-19 data, available online here. The data is current as of Friday.

Public Health Ontario released its weekly report tracking COVID-19 variants, covering the period from July 25 to Aug. 21. Within the EOHU, 31 cases tested positive for a variant during that four-week time period, an increase of one compared to the prior four-week period. Of the 31, 18 were confirmed as the Delta variant, 11 as the Alpha variant, and two as the Gamma variant.

The health unit reported an additional 801 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the region since its Thursday update, for a total of 299,653 doses administered since Jan. 12.

As far as changes in vaccination rates since Thursday’s update, the EOHU had 85.2 per cent of the eligible population over the age of 12 with at least one dose (up 0.2 per cent), and 78.5 per cent fully vaccinated (up 0.2 per cent).

Lastly, the EOHU reported an additional 320 tests collected at assessment centres since its Thursday update, for a running total there of 152,736.

The health unit’s next scheduled briefing is set for Monday afternoon.
