Five things to do this weekend, Sept. 17-19 - The Pioneer

With the air cooling and the leaves starting to change colors, thoughts turn to corn mazes and scarecrows. Here are five things to do this weekend.

1. Light up a Corn Maze

The Oxford Farm Corn Maze in Hersey will finish up the 2021 season with a “Light up the Night” event Saturday, Sept. 18. From 7-8 p.m., attendees will be able to navigate the rows of corn using their own flashlight. Children ages 7-11 must be accompanied by an adult, and no one younger than 7 will be admitted. The corn maze also will be open for all age groups 3-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18.

2. Take a Joyful Journey

Artworks' latest exhibit, Joyful Journey, showcases the work of artists from Hope Network. Hope Network is a local organization the provides a variety of services to consumers who experience physical, mental and social barriers. The exhibit will be open through Oct. 3.

3. Learn about kangaroos with your mates

Kindergarten through 5th graders are invited to hear a story about the Australian Kangaroo. Then design your own bangarang boomerang. The event is free and open to the public.

4.    Weave a scarecrow, make a heart of glass

Want to get into the fall spirit? Artworks is hosting a basket weaving worship Saturday. Make a small, adorable scarecrow basket under the tutelage of Jeanette Fleury and Nancy Randall.

Prefer glass to reeds? Learn how to cut small strips of glass & arrange them to create a heart. No experience necessary. All materials provided.

5.    Catch the Prevailing Winds

Take a musical journey from Mozart to Mexican Huapangos with quartet Prevailing Winds. The second installment of the Tuba Bach Festival features bassoonist Andrew Genemans, oboist Sarah Peterson, clarinetist John Varineau, and pianist and composer Noah Mallett. Concert is 4 p.m. Saturday, with an encore concert live-streamed only online and on Sunny 97.3 FM at 4 p.m. Sunday.
