Purple Eagles Earn Five-Set Victory Over Cornell - NU Purple Eagles.com

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (3-6) closed out non-conference play with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 25-23, 17-25, 15-8) victory over the Cornell Big Red (2-3) on Saturday.

Match Recap
First Set

  • The Purple Eagles and the Big Red went back and forth in the beginning of the set. The Big Red got ahead by four, 10-6, but a kill from Lexi Bapst brought NU back within three, 10-7.
  • Cornell scored four straight points to extend its lead, 14-7.
  • Down by eight, 17-9, kills from Mary Redl and Jaycie Roberts cut the Big Red lead to six, 17-11.
  • The Big Red got back ahead by eight, 20-12, but a kill from Roberts and a block by Jenna Vogen and Laryssa Imbuzeiro brought Niagara back within six points of the lead, 20-14.
  • The Big Red, however, held on to win the first set, 25-18.
Second Set
  • A 3-0 run early in the set, capped on either end by a kill from Redl and an ace from Casey Brown, put the Purple Eagles ahead of Cornell, 7-3.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Big Red were soon tied, 6-6, but a 4-0 run from Niagara put NU back in the lead, 12-6.
  • A kill from Roberts and a block from Redl and Imbuzeiro helped to extend Niagara's lead over Cornell, 15-8.
  • Cassie Seminoff had two kills in the reminder of the set, Bella Peroni had an ace and Vogen and Imbuzeiro had another block. The Purple Eagles won the second set, 25-14, to tie the match, 1-1.
Third Set
  • The Purple Eagles went on an early 4-0 run, including kills from Roberts, Imbuzeiro and Taylor Allen, to take a 5-2 lead over the Big Red.
  • An ace from Roberts and another kill from Allen helped NU to a four-point lead, 10-6, but Cornell scored five straight points to get ahead, 11-10.
  • Kills from Redl and Vogen put Niagara back on top, 12-10.
  • Down by two, 18-16, another kill from Vogen and a solo block from Imbuzeiro tied the score, 18-18.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Big Red traded the lead and were soon tied again, 23-23.
  • A block by Allen and Redl and an attack error on Cornell earned Niagara the points to win the set. 25-23.
Fourth Set
  • The Big Red went on a 16-8 run to open the fourth set.
  • A ball-handling error on Corner and a block by Imbuzeiro and Seminoff put the Purple Eagles within six points of the lead, 16-10.
  • Trailing 21-12, kills from Roberts and Vogen and a bad set by the Big Red cut Cornell's lead back to six, 21-15.
  • Vogen added one more kill in the set, but NU was not able to overcome Cornell as the Big Red took set four, 25-17.
Fifth Set
  • After allowing Cornell the first points, the Purple Eagles went on a 6-0 run, including four kills from Seminoff, to take the lead, 6-1.
  • Up 6-2, Niagara scored four straight points, including an ace from Imbuzeiro, another kill from Seminoff and a block by Redl and Allen, to extend its lead, 10-2.
  • Kills by Seminoff and Vogen put the Purple Eagles up by nine, 12-3.
  • Cornell went on a 4-0 rum, but a kill from Roberts and solo block from Allen kept the Purple Eagles ahead, 14-7.
  • Niagara allowed Cornell just one more point as the Purple Eagles won the set, 15-8, and the match, 3-2.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts had her sixth double-double of the season with 20 digs and a team-high 10 kills.
  • Amanda Darling had a team-high 24 digs. She was selected to the Cornell Invitational All-Tournament Team. 
  • Imbuzeiro had a team-high and career-high seven total blocks. Allen added five blocks.
  • Jessica Streuer had a team-best 17 assists.
  • Brown had 14 assists and a team-high two aces.
  • Seminoff added 12 digs and nine kills.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles begin MAAC play, and open their home schedule, Sept. 18-19. NU faces Marist on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m. and Siena on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 12:00 p.m.
