Five spooky things to do this Halloween weekend in Calgary - Calgary Herald

Article content

Halloween is Sunday and there are plenty of ways to get psyched up for the main event in Calgary.

From haunted houses to elaborate pumpkin carvings and family-friendly activities, there’s something fun for you to check out between now and the big day.

Pumpkins After Dark

Anyone who has ever carved a pumpkin will appreciate the ones on display at Pumpkins After Dark.

Take a walk around WinSport and see some elaborately carved pumpkin art that goes well beyond simple scary faces. Many of the displays use multiple pumpkins to create large canvases for pop culture characters, from super heroes to Disney princesses.

Tickets are still available for the next few nights, leading up to (and including) Halloween. Adults $19.95, children 4-17 $17.95. Children 3 and under are free.

Southcentre Mall’s Happy Mall-o-Ween

If you’re looking for scary selfie opportunities, check out Southcentre Mall and their Mall-O-Ween displays.

Five family-friendly Halloween-themed displays have been set up around the mall. Kids can find their way from one display to the next by following monster footprints on the floor.

Admission is free and there’s a chance to win one of five $100 gift cards by sharing your photos on social media.

For those who like to be terrified. Make your way through six different outdoor haunted houses at the Calgary Stampede Grandstand with themes such as Clown Town, Bates Motel and Walking With the Dead.

Tickets start at $25 for general admission, with skip-the-line options also available. Aside from the haunted houses, there are also carnival games, axe throwing and a few carnival rides. Tickets can be pre-purchased online.

Calgary Zoo’s ZooBOO

What’s better than trick or treating? Trick or treating at the zoo, of course. That’s what the Calgary Zoo is offering with ZooBOO.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, kids can visit the zoo in their Halloween costume. Kids 12 and under can hit up the treat stations along the way for goodies. Parents and teens are invited to dress up, too. In addition to treats, watch for activities throughout the park.

ZooBOO is included in the cost of regular admission while it is running, including for those who have season passes.

Heritage Park hosts Ghouls’ Night Out

For four nights, beginning on Thursday, Heritage Park’s streets will be decorated in the spirit of the season.

Participants are invited to visit in costume and bring a flashlight as they enjoy a variety of live shows. Due to COVID-concerns, the focus will be on visual entertainment instead of hands-on fun, but there will be spooky craft kits to take home. Kids can also trick-or-treat at the many historical homes in the park.

Tickets are $16.95 for adults and $11.95 for kids.
