COVID update: five new cases, 15 active - Belleville Intelligencer

Five new cases of COVID-19 announced Tuesday caused a slight increase in the number of local cases.

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health logged five new cases, three of them in Quinte West. There were also single cases in Belleville and Prince Edward County and three new recoveries across the region.

There were 15 cases active compared to 13 on Monday.

All of the new cases involved people no older than 49. Three were no older than 18.

Health unit data showed three were unvaccinated and two vaccinated fully. One case was due to a variant of concern.

No new deaths were reported Tuesday and no local hospital patients had tested positive for the virus.

The lone outbreak, which was at an undisclosed Belleville workplace, remained unchanged with three known cases.

Since the pandemic began, the region had recorded 1,484 cases, 1,455 recoveries and 14 deaths. There had been 134,082 first doses of vaccine administered to residents, 125,401 second doses and 2,550 third doses.

Vaccination rates were unchanged from those of Monday. At least 90 per cent of residents ages 12 and older had at least one dose; 84 per cent had two.

Across Ontario, about 89 per cent of those eligible had at least one dose and 85 per cent had two.

Seventy-seven per cent of Ontarians of all ages had at least one dose; 74 per cent had two.

The province on Tuesday recorded 331 new cases and 383 recoveries. Seven more people had died of the virus for a total of 9,881.

There were 96 more people hospitalized, for a total of 230 hospital patients testing positive. There were 136 patients in intensive-care units due to the virus and 111 were testing positive. Each figure was an increase from three compared to Monday. Sixty-seven people in those units required ventilators, a decrease of one since the previous day.

The Johns Hopkins University and Medicine Coronavirus Research Center reported 2,894 new Canadian cases and 30 more deaths on Monday. The numbers represented the latest figures available.

There had been 29,052 deaths in Canada and more than 1.7 million cases.

Globally the virus had caused more than 247.2 million cases, more than five million of which were fatal.
