Vancouver Police said it received several 911 calls about a fight that broke out near Davie Street and Mainland Street around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
At least five men were seriously hurt with stab wounds that required hospitalization, although police say there may be more injuries that went unreported as many of the people left without speaking to officers.
“It appears this was an altercation between two groups of intoxicated men who had come to Vancouver to party,” said Vancouver Police Department spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison in a statement issued Monday.
He called the level of violence “unsettling” given the density of the downtown Vancouver neighbourhood, which is home to many restaurants, pubs, and condos.
The five men, all residents of Surrey and Langley, suffered injuries to their faces, stomachs, backs and legs. The injuries are not life-threatening.
Two men in their 30’s from Surrey have been identified as suspects. They were not in custody, said police.
