Fiveasec: MLB-leading five Dodger players named to All-MLB teams

Five Dodgers were named to the All-MLB team, which was announced today by Major League Baseball. The five selections led the Major Leagues.

Right-handed pitchers Max Scherzer and Walker Buehler were named All-MLB First Team selections. Shortstop Trea Turner, left-handed pitcher Julio Urías and closer Kenley Jansen were All-MLB Second Team selections.

It’s Scherzer’s second career All-MLB selection after being named All-MLB First Team in 2019. Scherzer, who finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting, went 15–4 with a 2.46 ERA and 236 in 179 1/3 innings between the Dodgers and Nationals this year. The 37-year-old went 7–0 with a 1.98 ERA and 0.82 WHIP after going to the Dodgers at the deadline. He finished the season ranked second in the National League in ERA and first in WHIP (career-best 0.86) and opponents’ batting average (.185). The Dodgers won all 11 of his regular-season starts with the club.

Buehler received his first All-MLB honor after finishing fourth in NL CY Young voting while posting a 16–4 record with a 2.47 ERA and 212 strikeouts in 207 2/3 innings, all career-best marks. The All-Star led the Majors with 27 quality starts — four more than the next highest total — and tied for the Major League league with 33 starts. He ranked third in the NL in wins and ERA and was the NL Pitcher in the Month for August after going 3–0 with a 1.67 ERA over five July starts.

Turner, who joined Scherzer in the July 30 trade from Washington to Los Angeles, led the Majors with a .328 batting average and 195 hits and paced the National League with 32 stolen bases. He hit .322/.369/.521 with 18 homers in 96 games with the Nationals and .338/.385/.565 with 10 homers in 52 games with the Dodgers. Turner finished the regular season on a career-best 19-game hitting streak, which started three days after his 16-game hitting streak ended. He became the first Dodger to win the NL batting title since Tommy Davis won back-to-back crowns in 1962 and 1963 and became the first Dodger to win a batting title while leading the league in steals since Jackie Robinson in 1949. While Turner played second base for the Dodgers, he was nominated as a shortstop — his primary position with the Nationals.

Urías, baseball’s only 20-game winner this season, finished the year 20–3 with a 2.96 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 195 batters in 185 2/3 innings. He was the first Dodger to win 20 games since Clayton Kershaw in 2014. Urías finished seventh in Cy Young voting after going 9–0 with a 2.04 ERA the second half of the season.

Jansen went 4–4 with a 2.22 ERA and 38 saves, which tied for the second most in baseball, while striking out 86 batters in 69 innings. The 34-year-old closer went 3–0 with a 1.17 ERA, 17 saves and 42 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings in his last 30 games of the regular season. The Dodger all-time saves leader now ranks 13th all time in baseball history with 350 saves. He trails only Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman for the most saves with one team.
