Women's Golf Climbs into Top Five on Opening Day at Grandover
Women's Golf /
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Boosted by a second-round improvement from three golfers and a top-15 performance from sophomore Emma Landis, Longwood wrapped up the first day of the Grandover Fall Classic in fifth place in the 12-team tournament.
Landis led all Lancers with a 75-77—152 (+8) on the par-72 Grandover Resort course to place 12th overall in the 71-player field. The sophomore ace, who has led Longwood in each of its first three tournaments this fall, stayed atop the team leaderboard through her first two rounds thanks to back-to-back sub-par back nines on the par-72, 6,155-yard course.
Meanwhile, Lancers Ester Choi, Annabelle Jennings and Grace Huffman all enjoyed second-round improvements, with Choi making the biggest jump of the group to climb to a tie for 24th with an 82-75—157 (+13). Jennings followed in 34th place with an 81-79—160 (+16), while Huffman carded an 83-80—163 (+19) to tie for 42nd.
Along with senior Diana Domenech's 45th-place 79-85—164 (+20), Longwood was one of only two teams to have all five of its five countable golfers finish in the tournament's top 50, joining third-place Towson.
The third and final round of the Grandover Fall Classic will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, with Landis starting on hole four, Choi on five, Huffman and Jennings on six and Domenech on 11. Junior Peyton Schaffer, competing as an independent, will begin on 16.
