With three outbreaks declared and added to the list today, there are now currently five residence buildings on Queen’s University campus that are currently experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks.
This comes two days after announcing an outbreak among its varsity sports community, and at the same time over 4,500 students have signed a petition to have Queen’s halt in-person exams for the current fall term
Three of the five outbreaks were announced by Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (KFL&A) Public Health on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021: one at Brant House Residence involving two cases, both active; one at Chown Hall Residence, also involving two active cases, and; one at Victoria Hall Residence, also involving two active cases.
These three outbreaks, combined with the outbreak at Harkness Hall Residence (declared Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021; three cases total, one remains active), and the outbreak at McNeil House Residence (declared Friday, Nov. 26, 2021; five cases total, all remain active), bring the number of active outbreaks at Queen’s Residence buildings to five, currently involving seven active cases of COVID-19.
According to Queen’s University, 135 cases of COVID-19 within the university community have been reported this week, with 100 added to Queen’s active case listing on Friday evening. Despite allegations of cases involving the Omicron variant being present within the Queen’s community, both Queen’s and KFL&A Public Health would not confirm or deny those allegations. According to Public Health, 137 local COVID-19 tests with positive results have been sent to a lab for genome sequencing to detect the Omicron variant since the beginning of the day Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021.
