Sudbury Five name new coach, confirm 2022 roster - Sudbury.com

The Sudbury Five have named their new head coach and the eight players the team has signed for the 24-game 2022 season.

Elliott Etherington has been promoted to head coach and general manager of the Five, being joined behind the bench by returning Assistant Coach Denis Gauthier. Etherington, 28, hails from Chippawa, Ont., and has spent six years coaching in the NBLC. He joined the Five at the beginning of the 2019-2020 season, after two years with the London Lightning as associate coach and interim head coach, helping the team to an NBLC Championship. Before that he was the assistant coach for the Niagara River Lions during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons.

“I can’t wait to get the guys in and to start working towards the ultimate goal of bringing a championship to the most passionate fans in the country. I’ve been lucky enough to grow and develop myself as a coach through the better part of six seasons in this league,” Etherington said in a news release.

In terms of the playing talent, the Five announced eight players have signed to the team for the upcoming season. Locals Georges Serresse and Joey Puddister are  back, alongside the familiar faces of Josiah Moore, Dexter Williams Jr., Jaylen Bland and Braylon Rayson.

The roster is boosted by newcomers Marcel White and Evan Harris.

“I’m extremely happy to return a good chunk of our Canadian core and to bring back Jaylen Bland and Braylon Rayson who have been two of the most accomplished players in recent NBLC history,” said Etherington.

For his part, Bland said he’s excited to hit the court again.

“I’m super excited to be back in action, but I’m even more excited to play in Sudbury and be able to represent the city once again,” said Bland. “I love the city and the support we receive as a team from our fans. We still have unfinished business, and the city needs a championship. And that is the main goal for this season, as well as the reason for my return. Let’s get to it!”

In terms of the new talent, Marcel White is a 6-6 wing from Winter Haven, Florida who played NCAA D1 basketball at Jacksonville University. He was teammates with former Five player JR Holder. White most recently played in Austria before the global pandemic.

Evan Harris is a big 6-9 from Los Angeles, California, but now resides in North Bay with his wife and family. He played NCAA D1 basketball at Harvard and has been playing professionally since 2012, most recently in Norway where he was the BLNO’s top center for the 2020 season.

It’s been two years since the Five and the NBLC have been able to play in front of fans.

The league returns with a 24-game schedule (12 home, 12 away) and will feature six inter-league games against three The Basketball League (TBL) teams. For the full 2022 regular season schedule, visit thefive.ca.
