Five 99ers selected in OHL draft - Brantford Expositor

Article content

The Brantford Minor Hockey Association’s under-16 AAA 99ers team had five players selected in this weekend’s Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, including a pair in the first round.

Article content

Brantford  players Lucas Karmiris and Marek Vanacker made history when they became the first players from a 99ers team to be selected in the first round of the OHL draft in the same year.

Karmiris, a Brantford native, was selected 13th overall by the Mississauga Steelheads while Vanacker, a Delhi native, was taken 23rd overall by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Following those two selections, Braydon McCallum was the next 99er to be chosen as the Delhi native was picked in the fourth round (69th overall) by the Peterborough Petes.

Mississauga then selected another BMHA player when it chose Gabriel Chiarot in the seventh round (136th overall). Chiarot is a Hamilton native.

Tommy Karmiris, Lucas’ cousin, was the last 99er picked when Kingston selected him in the ninth round (179th overall). Karmiris is also from Brantford.

Michael Misa, an underage player from the Mississauga Senators, was the first player selected in the draft when Saginaw chose him.

Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti wins LaLiga to become first coach to earn titles in all of Europe's top five leagues - ESPN

Real Madrid have been crowned LaLiga champions for the 35th time after a 4-0 win against Espanyol at the Bernabeu saw Spanish football's most decorated team add the 2021-22 title to their collection.

Los Blancos took a vast 15-point lead into the weekend and required just one point to render the gap between them and the chasing pack mathematically unassailable.

The result also saw coach Carlo Ancelotti break new ground by becoming the first manager in history to win championships in all of Europe's top five leagues.

The 62-year-old Italian had already made history earlier this month when he reached the semifinals of the Champions League in a fourth different decade as a manager -- a total that goes up to five if you include his career as a player -- and now he has further augmented his status as one of European football's true greats.

An interesting facet of Ancelotti's achievement is that he has won each of the five major European league championships as a coach on just one occasion, and as such he cannot claim to have the most number of overall title wins among his peers (more on that later).

Here's how Ancelotti secured his historic first with a run of titles that began almost 20 years ago.

The first league title of Ancelotti's managerial career came with AC Milan in 2003-04 when he successfully guided the Rossoneri to glory for their first Scudetto since 1998-99. Ancelotti's side -- who had won the first of two Champions League crowns under his management the previous season -- managed to win the league by an impressive margin of 11 points over second-place Roma, who scored three more goals and conceded five fewer than Milan.

Ancelotti was appointed as manager of Chelsea in July 2009, the very day after ending his long association with Milan having overseen an underwhelming third-place finish in Serie A. He delivered the Premier League title in his maiden campaign, though the race went right down to the final day. In the end, the Blues pipped rivals Manchester United by a single point with an 8-0 drubbing of Wigan Athletic that also saw them set a new league record for goals scored in a single season (103). Ancelotti led the club to their first-ever double six days later by beating Portsmouth in the FA Cup final, but his tenure only lasted until the end of the following season.

Ancelotti spent less than 18 months in charge at Paris Saint-Germain from December 2011 to May 2013 and yet still found time to claim the Ligue 1 title in his first and only full season at the helm. He took over from the deposed Antoine Kombouare and finished runner-up behind Montpellier in his first few months at the Parc des Princes before going one better in 2012-13 and tying up the first championship under the club's Qatari ownership with two matches to spare.

After a two-year spell in charge at Real Madrid in which he won his third Champions League title, and Real's long-awaited 10th, Ancelotti was appointed as Bayern Munich coach for the 2016-17 season. He replaced Pep Guardiola, who departed having won three titles in as many seasons in Germany. Ancelotti maintained the standard and brought the Meisterschale back to the Allianz Arena for a fifth consecutive year, with his side at the top of the table for all but three game weeks of the season. However, he only made it in the job until September of the following season, when he was fired in the wake of a 3-0 loss to former club PSG in the Champions League.

Ancelotti claimed "La Decima" during his first spell at the Bernabeu from 2013 to 2015 but lost out to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in his two league title races. However, he was handed a chance at redemption when he was poached from Everton and reappointed by Los Blancos in June 2021 to replace Zinedine Zidane and, just 10 months later, he earned it. 4-0 against Espanyol made certain of Real's first LaLiga crown since 2019-20 and only their third in the past decade.

Other coaches who could win titles in top five leagues

While Ancelotti is out on his own in terms of titles in different major European leagues, there are several other vastly successful managers still active in the game who could conceivably equal or better his pan-continental record before they retire:

Pep Guardiola
9 major European titles in total:
Premier League: 3 (Manchester City)
LaLiga: 3 (Barcelona)
Bundesliga: 3 (Bayern Munich)

Jose Mourinho
6 titles:
Premier League: 3 (Chelsea)
Serie A: 2 (Inter Milan)
LaLiga: 1 (Real Madrid)

Massimiliano Allegri
6 titles:
Serie A: 6 (Juventus, AC Milan)

Antonio Conte
5 titles:
Serie A: 4 (Juventus, Inter Milan)
Premier League: 1 (Chelsea)

Roberto Mancini
4 titles:
Serie A: 3
Premier League: 1

Jurgen Klopp
3 titles:
Bundesliga: 2
Premier League: 1

Five rescued from China building collapse, many still missing - Al Jazeera English

At least 23 people were in building when it collapsed and 39 others are uncontactable, authorities said.

Rescuers in central China pulled five people alive from a partially collapsed building on Saturday where at least 18 others could still be trapped.

The six-story building, which housed a hotel, apartments and a cinema, caved in on Friday afternoon in Changsha city, Hunan province, with 23 people inside. Authorities also said that 39 other people who were around the building when it toppled remain uncontactable.

“The situation of the missing persons is being further assessed,” mayor Zheng Jianxin said.

The five people who were rescued are in stable condition in hospital, authorities said at a news conference.

Building collapses are not uncommon in China due to weak safety standards and corruption among officials tasked with enforcement of construction quality standards.

In January, an explosion triggered by a suspected gas leak brought down a building in the city of Chongqing, killing more than a dozen people.

Twenty-five people also lost their lives in June 2021 when a gas blast hit a residential compound in the city of Shiyan.

President Xi Jinping has given instructions to rescue the latest victims “at all costs”, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

Preliminary investigations revealed that tenants of the flattened building had made structural changes to the premises, though the exact cause of the disaster is still being investigated.

Warriors beat Blades to win WHL playoff series in five games - News Talk 980 CJME

It’s an 18th birthday Jagger Firkus won’t forget.

The Moose Jaw Warriors forward had two goals and an assist, propelling his team to a 6-4 win over the Saskatoon Blades and punching their ticket to the second round of the WHL playoffs.

“(The birthday) was good. Coming into this game we wanted to put them out tonight and that was all that was on my mind — just coming into this game and winning,” Firkus said. “When I’m shooting the puck it goes in. That’s what I thought about going into this game — just shooting the puck from everywhere.”

But while the Warriors get to celebrate and continue their season, the Blades’ run has come to an end.

“They’re a good hockey team and have a lot of talent. We started a little slow (in the series) and got better every game,” Saskatoon head coach Brennan Sonne said. “We just got down two (goals) deep and just had no margin for error. I will say we battled all the way to the end. You go down 2-0 quick and then battle back and then down 3-2. I’m still proud of the guys.”

The Warriors, who finished just one point ahead of the Blades in the regular-season standings, won all three games they played at Mosaic Place in the best-of-round series. The Warriors won Game 3 in Saskatoon while the Blades kept their season alive in Game 4.

“You work all season long and it’s a long season and you’re playing for something — home-ice advantage is certainly one of them,” Warriors head coach Mark O’Leary said. “It proved to be an important factor in this series and I think any team will say they are more comfortable playing at home. For us, that is certainly the case.”
The Warriors were the first to find the back of the net Friday, with a pass from Brayden Yager from behind Blades goaltender Nolan Maier finding Jagger Firkus in the slot. Firkus fired it into the back of the net.

Later in the period, during a high-sticking double minor to Saskatoon’s Brandon Lisowsky, Denton Mateychuk fired a puck past Maier 13 seconds into the man advantage.

The Blades pulled within one with a power-play goal of their own, with Lisowsky firing a shot on net but hitting teammate Josh Pillar in front of Moose Jaw goalie Carl Tetachuk. The puck went into the air and as it came down, Moose Jaw’s Calder Anderson tried to swipe it out of harm’s way with his hand — but the puck landed in the back of the net instead.

In the second frame, the Blades were able to get within one, with Josh Pillar scoring.

The Warriors scored another one after a pass from Majid Kaddoura found Thomas Tien, who got behind the Blades’ defenders and put a shot past Maier.

Saskatoon once again pulled within one goal, with Trevor Wong getting a puck past Tetachuk.

But Atley Calvert put an end to the series after a rebound from Maier ended up in the slot and on the Warriors’ stick, who scored the fifth goal of the game for the home team.

O’Leary said the team’s ability to remain calm when opposing teams get within a goal speaks to the mindset they’ve had all season.

“When you get knocked down, you have to get up fast and punch back,” O’Leary said.

Robert Baco added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.

For the Blades, it marked the end of their seasons and the end of the WHL careers for Tristen Robins, Rhett Rhinehart, and Maier.

“It’s tough but at least they got playoffs. The last couple groups didn’t even have that. As sad as we are that they are gone, this is what it is all about — we’re trying to develop human beings and hockey players at the same time,” Sonne said. “They’re off to the next chapter of their lives.”

“It meant a lot (to play in playoffs). We had a couple unfortunate years with COVID everything. To share this experience and go to war with these guys every night, it’s an experience like no other,” Robins said.

After the game, all the Blades players lined up to shake Maier’s hand after his final WHL game. He goes out as the WHL’s all-time wins leader.

“He’s the best to put on a Blades jersey and one of the best to be in between the pipes in this league,” Robins said.

The Warriors will play the Winnipeg Ice in the next round if the Red Deer Rebels win their series against the Brandon Wheat Kings. If Brandon wins, Moose Jaw will match up against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

“We prepare by trying to get healthy and take advantage of some rest here,” O’Leary said. “Whether you’re playing Edmonton or Winnipeg, you’re playing a team that’s built to win now and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

And O’Leary hopes the team can keep the wins coming and allow captain Daemon Hunt to return to the lineup.

“It’s our responsibility to keep this thing going long enough to see him again. Him, Eric Alarie and Riley Niven, all three of them we will see how this week looks, and hopefully we see them back in the lineup soon,” O’Leary said.

How five Mets pitchers combined to throw second no-hitter in franchise history - Sporting News

On June 1, 2012, Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in Mets history. Almost 10 years later, Tylor Megill was at the head of a five-pitcher effort for the franchise's second. It was punctuated by Edwin Diaz striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The Mets closed the deal on the first no-hitter of the 2022 MLB season where the Rays could not last week against the Red Sox. Tampa Bay pitchers threw nine no-hit innings in a bullpen game before Boston broke it up in the 10th.

MORE: Most recent no-nos for each MLB team

Here's how the Mets pulled it off:

Tylor Megill: 5 IP, 5 Ks, 3 BBs

Megill got through the Phillies' batting order twice. He walked three and struck out five. Kyle Schwarber was the Phillies' first baserunner of the night with a second-inning walk. Mets center fielder Brandon Nimmo made a diving catch in the gap to rob Jean Segura of a hit in the third inning.

After a clean fourth inning, Megill walked two in the fifth: Schwarber again and Didi Gregorius. Megill exited after the fifth having thrown 88 pitches. He improved his season ERA to 1.93 over five starts.

Drew Smith: 1 1/3 IP, 4 Ks, 1 BB

Smith relived Megill at the start of the sixth inning. After striking out Segura and Rhys Hoskins, he walked Bryce Harper on the third full count of the inning. Smith came back and struck out Nick Castellanos on four pitches to end the inning.

Smith struck out J.T. Realmuto to lead off the seventh inning and then came out for Joely Rodriguez. Smith has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Joely Rodriguez: 1 IP, 0 Ks, 2 BBs

Rodriguez had perhaps the bumpiest outing among the Mets' five pitchers Friday. He was the only one to not end his night on an out. He handed Schwarber his third walk of the game before getting Alec Bohm to ground into a double play to end the inning.

Rodriguez came out to start the eighth inning and induced a Gregorius groundout. He then walked Johan Camargo on a full count. Rodriguez was pulled after that in favor of Seth Lugo.

Seth Lugo: 2/3 IP, 0 Ks, 0 BBs

Lugo made quick work of the next two batters. He got Segura to pop out to shortstop Francisco Lindor and Hoskins to foul out to first baseman Pete Alonso. New York closer Edwin Diaz began warming in the Mets' bullpen during the inning.

Edwin Diaz: 1 IP, 3 Ks, 0 BBs

Against the heart of the Phillies' order — Harper, Castellanos and Realmuto — Diaz showed off his nastiest stuff. He struck out the side on just 13 pitches, 10 of them sliders. Diaz got Realmuto on three straight sliders to end the game and complete the no-hitter.

The NL East-leading Mets walked away with a 3-0 win, Diaz walked away with his third save of the season and Megill improved to 4-0. He's tied with the Blue Jays' Alek Manoah and Adam Cimber for the MLB lead in wins. New York is now 15-6 on the year.

MORE: Who, exactly, were the Rays' pitchers in no-hit bid vs. Red Sox?

"I'm ecstatic. It's crazy. It's the first one I've been a part of," Megill said after the game, per Yahoo Sports.

It was the 17th combined no-hitter in MLB history and the first since Sept. 11, 2021, when Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader put one together for the Brewers. The five pitchers used by the Mets are the most in a combined no-hitter since 2012, when the Mariners used six to no-hit the Dodgers 1-0. It's the second no-hitter caught by the Mets' James McCann; he was behind the plate for Lucas Giolito's no-hitter for the White Sox against the Pirates in 2020.

Five Thoughts for a Friday: Autopsy - Silver Seven

Look, I’ll try to make this as optimistic of an article as possible but the Ottawa Senators did me no favours with an absolute stinker against a team resting its starters to close out the home schedule. With just one game to go (tonight in Philly) I want to find some silver linings to give us some hope that the Sens can finally turn it around next season. Starting from ownership down to management and coaching, none of us know what to expect in the coming months. This team desperately needs a culture change to return to that bygone era of perennial playoff appearances but we could just as easily end up in a desert of decade-long mediocrity—optimism—I can do this!

Goaltending

While I can certainly understand the argument that a budget team can’t have almost $10M against the cap tied up in goalies, Anton Forsberg has played really well this season and as I explained at length, I believe the Matt Murray of yesterday still exists somewhere. Ottawa also has a couple of solid goaltending prospects. And, keep in mind that Murray’s contract more than likely ends up on LTIR than anything else at this rate. I want to focus on numbers and not conjecture though.

While Ottawa’s goaltenders struggle in some realms, they have thrived on the penalty kill (where the team curiously struggled for much of the season (more on that to come)). Forsberg ranks second in the NHL in total penalty kill goals saved above average (13.08). Only Igor Shesterkin (who will likely win the Vezina) has more GSAA on the PK. Since the deadline specifically, on the penalty kill Fosrberg still ranks just behing Shsterkin (3.40 GSAA compared to 3.55). Talk about elite company for Horny Dog. Worth noting, Murray also stayed on the positive side of the ledger with 1.29 GSAA shorthanded.

At five on five (where the Sens have suffered as a team (more below)) Ottawa’s goaltenders have struggled as Forsberg only ranks in the top 20 in GSAA at 4.42. Since the trade deadline, Filip Gustavsson has outplayed Forsberg with 3.73 GSAA compared to 3.24 (at five-on-five). If nothing else, the Sens still have a lot of healthy internal competition.

Penalty Kill

For much of the season, Ottawa gave up as much on the penalty kill as any team in the NHL and their goaltending had to bail them out on a nightly basis. Since the trade deadline though, Ottawa has significantly righted the ship, now ranking top-three in the league at 5.81 expected goals against per 60 on the penalty kill while their shorthanded save percentage of 88.8 only ranks eighth in the league.

Now if you’re an asshole like me then you immediately look at the departure of Josh Brown and credit the improved penalty kill to his absence but at the same time, Travis Hamonic has quickly become Ottawa’s worst penalty-killer (table below). You cannot make this shit up, folks.

If you, like me, have enjoyed head coach DJ Smith’s experiment with youngsters on the PK then I have good news because Erik Brännström and Parker Kelly have conceded less than anyone on Ottawa’s penalty kill since the deadline. Josh Norris shorthanded hasn’t worked out quite as well. Mathieu Joseph has also struggled in limited minutes and has had zero luck goaltending-wise. We can take some solace knowing that Ottawa’s suddenly functional penalty kill could largely remain in tact for next year with the likes of Nikita Zaitsev, Nick Holden, and Connor Brown still under contract.

Penalty Kill

Player xGA/60 On-Ice SV%
Player xGA/60 On-Ice SV%
Parker Kelly 5.07 90.9
Erik Brannstrom 5.22 94.1
Nick Holden 5.29 86.4
Nikita Zaitsev 5.29 85.0
Austin Watson 5.30 100.0
Connor Brown 5.53 81.8
Mathieu Joseph 5.92 75.0
Alex Formenton 5.97 93.6
Artem Zub 6.20 95.8
Josh Norris 6.39 81.5
Dylan Gambrell 6.77 94.4
Travis Hamonic 7.26 93.8

Powerplay

Looking at the success the Senators did enjoy this season, we can attribute much to the powerplay. After all, this team has five good players. The lack of depth kills them. Since the deadline, said powerplay has ranked 12th in the league with 8.07 expected goals per 60 and an even better shooting percentage rank (ninth in the league at 16%).

Now, like most teams, the Sens face the dilemma of whether to keep intact their one effective powerplay unit two create two viable options. One thing I’ll say to this effect, Ottawa has two very good powerplay quarterbacks in Thomas Chabot and Brännström, Based on the numbers below, I would argue Brännström has even outperformed Chabot of late.

Forever the Colin White fanboy, I love to report that based on the numbers, White has looked like Ottawa’s best powerplay forward outside of the big four. Players like Brown and Alex Formenton haven’t quite gotten it done but maybe forwards like Joseph or Shane Pinto could lend themselves to an effective second unit with one of the aforementioned quarterback options. Interestingly enough (going again by the table below) other than Brännström and Chabot, the expected and actual goals line up in this small sample.

Powerplay

Player xGF/60 On-Ice SH%
Player xGF/60 On-Ice SH%
Erik Brannstrom 10.73 16.67
Josh Norris 9.93 19.35
Brady Tkachuk 9.91 19.35
Tim Stützle 9.88 20.69
Drake Batherson 9.46 18.75
Colin White 8.82 16.67
Thomas Chabot 7.30 22.22
Connor Brown 5.35 0
Adam Gaudette 4.41 0
Michael Del Zotto 3.51 0
Alex Formenton 2.68 0
Chris Tierney 2.61 0

Five on Five

Now considering the Sens will once again draft in the top-ten this summer, you have to know they struggled at five-on-five, and that trend continued well after the trade deadline. Both offence and defence performed poorly and this led to an expected goals for percentage of 46.12 at five-on-five since the deadline (25th in the NHL over that span). Ottawa can attribute their limited five-on-five success to a shooting percentage of 8.64 that ranks 18th and a save percentage of 92.58 that ranks fourth (imagine this team without exceptional goaltending! Yeesh!).

Looking at the numbers in the table below, Joseph really redeemed Ottawa’s five-on-five play since the deadline, even if we factor in the small sample size and the fortunate bounces. Shaan already wrote about it at length, but Ottawa might have quite a player in Joseph. On the other end of the spectrum, I lament that the Adam Gaudette experiment failed spectacularly. I had high hopes for Gaudette like a lot of you but he ranks dead last going by on-ice expected goals among the forwards with significant five-on-five minutes for Ottawa since the deadline. Colin White Applogists again get some vindication here as the nerd numbers really favour White despite a lot of lousy luck (the same goes for Brown). Parker Kelly has turned into a very promising internally-developed option for meaningful depth minutes but he has very bizarre results wherein pucks just always go in the net when he hits the ice (see the table).

Five on Five (Forwards)

Player xGF/60 xGA/60 xGF% On-Ice SH% On-Ice SV%
Player xGF/60 xGA/60 xGF% On-Ice SH% On-Ice SV%
Mathieu Joseph 2.98 2.12 58.44 11.36 93.15
Brady Tkachuk 2.73 2.73 50.01 9.59 93.84
Colin White 2.40 2.46 49.38 5.41 88.41

Adam Gaudette 1.66 3.23 33.91 3.03 96.04

Speaking of expected goals versus reality, Victor Mete continues to live up to his reputation as a nerd stats darling who simply has no puck luck. Looking at Chabot’s results I have to assume his latest injury has lingered or maybe all the big minutes from earlier in the season have simply caught up to him. Either way, I expect the Chabot we know and love to get back to the top of the chart next season. As an Erik Brännström apologist, I want to make a hundred excuses for his poor performance at five-on-five since the deadline but I won’t. He needs to bounce back from this. It runs deeper than poor shooting luck.

Parting Thoughts

Quick question: What do Vegas, Nashville, and Pittsburgh all have in common? Losing more games than Ottawa since the deadline, baby. The Sens may have done it the “wrong” way (through special teams and percentages) but they won some games in the past month to keep us entertained when we could have just as easily tuned out. I would argue that the team has improved in some meaningful ways since I wrote this piece before the deadline and now we just have to see if unlike last season, management trusts the roster it has or if they go on another bizarre shopping spree this summer (Michael Del Zotto?!).

Before parting, I will once again remind you that all stats come courtesy of naturalstattrick (and these stats do not include the Florida game). I also want to, in all sincerity, thank you the reader for another (often grueling but ultimately memorable) season of Ottawa Senators hockey here at SilverSeven. Go Sens Go.

Rahm part of five-way tie for the lead in Mexico Open - TSN

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Jon Rahm is the biggest star in the Mexico Open and he lived up to his billing Thursday, chipping in for birdie and making a late eagle putt for a 7-under 64 and a six-way share of the lead in the first round.

Jonathan Byrd, Brendon Todd, Trey Mullinax and Monday qualifier Bryson Nimmer also were at 64 from the morning wave. Nimmer played his final five holes in 5 under, including a bunker shot he holed out for eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.

Kurt Kitayama faced the strength of the afternoon wind and made nine birdies, getting up-and-down from behind the green on the par-5 18th for his 64.

The Mexico Open is part of the PGA Tour schedule and inherits the history of a national open that dates to 1944. It takes the place of the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship that was at Chapultepec in Mexico City for four years through 2020.

Rahm knew very little about the Vidanta Vallarta course except that he felt comfortable off the tee, and it showed. The Spaniard missed only one fairway, and three greens.

He opened with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 12th hole, but it was the chip-in from 30 feet on the 13th that really got him going. He had to save par on the 10th and 11th holes at the start of his round.

“I hadn't hit my best irons shots early on,” Rahm said. “Chipped that one in from an uncomfortable lie and a tough one. That was a huge bonus. I think a lot of people obviously would look at the eagle on 7, but that one early on was a huge booster.”

The eagle on the 311-yard seventh hole was set up by a big drive to the middle of the green on the par 4 and a 40-foot putt that gave him a share of the lead.

Rahm also made birdie on each of the three par 5s on the back nine, and perhaps his finest shot was his approach from 206 yards to just inside 4 feet for birdie on the par-4 fourth.

Nimmer finished with a blaze of good shots. After a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 fifth, he holed out for eagle, pitched to 2 feet on the reachable seventh and made a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth to close out his round.

Aaron Rai, Aaron Wise, Sahith Theegala and Scott Brown were at 65. Rai and Theegala could use top finishes this week to move up in PGA Championship points and try to secure a spot at Southern Hills in three weeks.

Michael Gligic of Burlington, Ont., shot a 67 to move into a tie for 21st at 4 under, Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., was the next best Canadian after he shot a 70, Adam Svensson from Surrey, B.C. shot a 71 and Roger Sloan and David Hearn are both above par for the championship at plus 3 and plus 4, respectively after they shot a 74 and 75.

Next week is the final event for players to qualify in points, which is PGA Tour earnings.

Rahm and Abraham Ancer (71) are the only players from the top 20 in the world at the Mexico Open. That allowed for players like Byrd, who has status as a past champion, to get in.

He improved his status with a pair of cuts made in the fall. He tied for ninth at Pebble Beach, which got him into the Phoenix Open. Byrd has managed to get in 10 tournaments so far, and feels he is getting some momentum.

“I started the year thinking I might get in 15, looks like I might get in more like 20. I’m just happy to have starts,” Byrd said. “And my game’s good, so trying to stay aggressive and see what I can make of it.”

Byrd went out in 29 and reached 7 under for the round with a birdie on the par-5 12th. He added a bogey and a birdie the rest of the way.

Patrick Reed won the Mexico Championship at Chapultepec two years ago. He had six birdies in his round of 68, leaving him three shots behind.

The wind off the Pacific began to blow as Rahm and other starters had an hour or so to go in their rounds, so the Spaniard will have that to contend with on Friday.

“We had no wind for 13, 14 holes. It’s very, very scorable,” Rahm said. “Once the wind starts going 20, 30 miles an hour, this golf course starts showing some teeth.”

NFL Draft 2022: Five bold first-round predictions, from Steelers' new QB to record wide receiver run - CBS Sports

The 2022 NFL offseason has been a whirlwind of big-name movement, and many of the headlines have emerged suddenly and surprisingly: Russell Wilson to the Broncos, Deshaun Watson to the Browns, Davante Adams to the Raiders, Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. Now, the draft is upon us, and more drama is on tap.

No one knows exactly how the first round (8 p.m. on Thursday) will play out, especially with such a disparity on opinions on top prospects, but here are five bold predictions for Day One of the action.

Follow complete Round 1 coverage in CBS Sports' 2022 NFL Draft live tracker.

The Jaguars take an OT at No. 1

For weeks -- nay, months -- the talk has centered on Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson and, more recently, Georgia's Travon Walker as leading candidates to go first overall. Both pass-rushers, the reasoning goes, would instantly fill one of the top remaining needs for a Jaguars team that invested at pretty much every other position this offseason. And we don't doubt Hutchinson and Walker are -- or were -- in the conversation at No. 1.

But everyone in that building knows the clearest path out of dysfunction is proper development of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Why else would they have hired Doug Pederson, known culture-builder and QB mentor? Or wildly overpaid for wide receivers like Christian Kirk and Zay Jones? Or dropped almost $50 million for Brandon Scherff up front? Or committed (more) franchise-tag money to left tackle Cam Robinson?

Everyone understandably assumes general manager Trent Baalke is running the show, but let's not forget Pederson has a voice. He wants his QB upright. Even with Robinson back, at least for 2022, another premium investment up front -- likely in the form of Alabama's Evan Neal or NC State's Ikem Ekwonu -- would further shore up the line for the short and long term.

Kayvon Thibodeux doesn't make it out of the top three

Who decided this guy wasn't gonna be a legitimate candidate to go No. 1? He's got the physical upside of someone like Walker and the proven pass-rushing resume of someone like Hutchinson. Apparently his abundant confidence is a turn-off to some, but how many teams presently wish they, not the Rams, had traded for Jalen Ramsey and his unbreakable ego? Unless he truly bombed interviews behind closed doors, he feels primed to go earlier than expected. This is a freakish talent at a position of huge importance. Detroit (No. 2) and Houston (No. 3) may well swipe him before the Jets (No. 4) get a chance.

Kenny Pickett stays in Pittsburgh

That's right, a hometown connection! Malik Willis might be the apple of the Steelers' eye at QB, but you could probably say the same for every QB-needy team, because the Liberty product is the only true high-octane signal-caller bet of this class. Odds are, weak class or not, Willis is going to be off the board ahead of the Steelers' No. 20 pick, and we're not so sure Pittsburgh is willing to pay a premium to move up, knowing Mitchell Trubisky and/or a Day Two addition can compete to hold down the fort until 2023. Pickett, on the other hand, could be in for a big slide if he makes it past the Panthers at No. 6, and beyond the Steel City ties, he's got both the steady accuracy and requisite athleticism that coordinator Matt Canada is seeking.

A record seven WRs are selected

Seven is the highest number of receivers ever to be drafted in the first round, but that could easily be matched on Thursday. Garrett Wilson (Ohio State), Drake London (USC) and Jameson Williams (Alabama) are all but locks to go in the top 15, while Chris Olave (Ohio State) and Treylon Burks (Arkansas) feel like safe bets to be taken in the top 25. That's five already. Then you've got Jahan Dotson (Penn State), George Pickens (Georgia) and Skyy Moore (Western Michigan) who could easily appeal to receiver-hungry teams (e.g. Chiefs, Packers, Titans) picking on the back end.

By the end of Thursday night, most teams still in search of 2022 QB help will have either found their answer or decided to, at most, take a Day Two flyer on competition. That should quickly finalize the limited market for the disgruntled Browns QB, with Cleveland then able to swap Day Two or Day Three picks -- or perhaps net a conditional 2023 pick -- and confirm Watson's polarizing ownership of the remodeled QB room. In terms of most likely landing spots for Baker, our list remains the same: the Panthers and Seahawks make the most sense, but the Lions and Texans can't be totally ruled out, either.

One in five reptiles is threatened with extinction - BBC

King cobra
Ophiophagus Hannah

One in five reptiles is threatened with extinction, according to the first comprehensive assessment of more than 10,000 species across the world.

Scientists are calling for urgent conservation action for crocodiles and turtles, which are in a particularly dire situation.

They say reptiles have long been overlooked in conservation, because they are seen as less charismatic than "furry and feathery" creatures.

So far, 31 species have gone extinct.

The study, published in Nature, took more than 15 years to complete, because of problems getting funding for the work.

"Reptiles to many people are not charismatic and there's been a lot more focus on more furry, feathery species of vertebrates for conservation," said Dr Bruce Young of the international nature organisation, NatureServe.

Despite their low publicity profile, the cold-blooded vertebrates play an essential role in the balance of life.

"Reptiles are good for people because they help control pests such as insects and rodents," said Prof Blair Hedges of Temple University in Philadelphia, US.

By publicising the plight of these "truly spectacular species", the scientists hope to help slow the slide towards oblivion of reptiles such as the loggerhead sea turtle and the gharial, or fish-eating crocodile.

And there is a glimmer of hope in that measures put in place to protect rare birds and mammals also safeguard many of the reptiles that share the same land.

Johannes Els

The study found:

  • 21% of reptile species are threatened (1,800 individual species); which is higher than for birds, but lower than for mammals and amphibians
  • More than half of crocodiles and almost two thirds of turtles are threatened with extinction
  • Reptiles are threatened throughout the world, but particularly in southeast Asia, West Africa, northern Madagascar, the northern Andes and the Caribbean
  • Habitat destruction from the expansion of farmland, urban development and logging is a big factor pushing reptiles to the brink. Crocodiles and turtles also face threats from hunting
  • Reptiles found in forests are more at risk than those living in deserts and savannahs
  • Climate change is a looming threat to reptiles, particularly on low-lying islands
  • If we were to lose all reptile species at risk of extinction, 15.6 billion years of evolution would be wiped from the planet.

Ij Avila

Speaking at a news conference, the study authors highlighted the need for a new worldwide agreement to stem extinctions.

Neil Cox of the IUCN-Conservation International Biodiversity Assessment Unit said negotiations at the upcoming summit on biodiversity in Kunming, China, will be critical for trying to turn the tide on biodiversity loss.

"The hope is that we can really start making efforts to reverse this extinction catastrophe," he said.

The final version of the draft UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be negotiated at the COP15 summit, which is expected to take place at the end of August.

The outcome will decide for the coming decades how the world will address the challenges of reducing the extinction risk threatening more than one million species, eliminating billions of dollars of environmentally-damaging government subsidies and restoring degraded ecosystems.

Five things to know about Russian-backed Transnistria - Al Jazeera English

A series of attacks have targeted sites in Transnistria, a Russian-backed breakaway region in Moldova which borders Ukraine.

Blasts tore through the state security headquarters in Tiraspol on Monday and two explosions damaged Soviet-era radio masts on Tuesday in the village of Maiac, Grigoriopol district.

There were no reports of deaths or wounded and no one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts. The Ukrainian defence ministry called the events a “planned provocation by the Russian special services.” Moldova’s president warned they were an attempt to escalate tensions, blaming “pro-war factions” within the breakaway territory.

Here is what you should know about Transnistria and why it matters in the context of the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

What is Transnistria?

Transnistria, also commonly known as Transdniester, is a narrow strip of land between the east bank of the Dniester River and Moldova’s border with Ukraine.

Of a total population of about 470,000 people, ethnic Russians and Ukrainians together outnumber ethnic Moldovans.

While internationally recognised as part of Moldova, the Russian-backed breakaway territory has been under the control of separatist authorities since 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union triggered a conflict between the newly independent Republic of Moldova and separatists who wanted to maintain Soviet ties.

No country, including Russia, recognises the territory as independent, but Moldovan authorities have no control over the region, which functions akin to a separate state.

What does Transnistria have to do with the Russia-Ukraine conflict?

Russia has an estimated 1,500 soldiers in Transnistria, which Moscow refers to as a “peacekeeping” force. Kyiv is concerned that those forces could be used to attack Ukraine from the west.

Russia carried out military drills in the region as recently as February 2, and has said the Russian presence is essential to protect their citizens in the area and keep the peace between Moldovans and Transnistrians.

Should Russian President Vladimir Putin decide to involve Transnistria in the war in some capacity, it has little leverage to refuse, as it remains economically dependent on Russia, including for free gas.

What are Russia’s interests in Transnistria?

Rustam Minnekayev, deputy commander of Russia’s central military district, was quoted last week by state news agencies as saying that Russia aimed to take control of southern Ukraine, which would give it access to Transnistria.

It is unclear whether the Russian military, embroiled in a fight to take eastern Ukraine, would be able to seize more territory in southern Ukraine and advance towards Moldova.

But Russia could potentially seek to use Transnistria to assist with medical aid and food, guarding convoys and securing the railway network, and offering a safe space where to resupply its troops, repair equipment and regroup.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia’s invasion of his country was just the beginning and that Moscow has designs on seizing territory in other countries, as well.

Is Moldova a NATO member?

Moldova is a not part of the transatlantic military alliance and has sought to stay neutral since its independence, with neutrality enshrined in its constitution.

There are concerns about its ability to defend itself from a potential Russian invasion should Putin push towards its border with Ukraine.

However, last month the nation of about 2.6 million submitted a bid to join the European Union, along with Georgia and Ukraine.

Does Russia have ambitions in the region?

A week into Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, a video surfaced showing Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko standing next to a map that appeared to indicate Transnistria as a potential target.

Officials in Belarus later said the map was a mistake.

Moldova has a long history of domination by the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. However, it has been transitioning away from Russian influence since the 1990s, slowly moving towards Europe.

Emma Raducanu splits with coach Torben Beltz after only five months together - Sky Sports

US Open champion Emma Raducanu is now looking for a fourth coach in less than a year after splitting with Torben Beltz; the teenager, who will continue her clay-court baptism in Madrid this week, will lean on the Lawn Tennis Association in the short term

Emma Raducanu has split with her coach Torben Beltz after only five months together.

The US Open champion hired the German, best known for guiding Angelique Kerber through her professional career, at the end of last season but it has proved another short-lived relationship.

Raducanu said in a statement: "I want to thank Torben for his coaching, professionalism and dedication over last half a year. He has a huge heart and I have enjoyed our strong chemistry during the time together.

"I feel the best direction for my development is to transition to a new training model with the LTA supporting in the interim."

The decision means Raducanu is now looking for a fourth coach in less than a year.

Beltz was appointed after the US Open champion decided not to extend a short-term partnership with Andrew Richardson, following her stunning New York triumph.

Richardson had previously coached the 19-year-old at Bromley Tennis Centre and was chosen to accompany her at the US Open because of their familiarity with one another,

Previously, she had been working with Nigel Sears, who oversaw her run to the fourth round at Wimbledon last summer.

After her famous US Open win, Raducanu highlighted that she was looking for a more experienced mentor moving forward and her search led her to Beltz, with their partnership being announced at the end of November 2021.

Beltz had been Kerber's long-term mentor across a decade and had just parted ways with the 34-year-old.

Beltz helped with Kerber's first steps on the professional tour, including her move into the top 10 before they split for the first time in 2013.

They then reunited and Beltz was by Kerber's side for the best campaign of her career in 2016, when she won Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open, reached the Wimbledon final, claimed an Olympic silver medal and became world No 1.

The pair split again at the end of 2017 before reuniting for a third time, and finally parting ways prior to Beltz's time with Raducanu.

Tuesday's announcement comes after Raducanu's best week since hiring Beltz, with back-to-back wins on clay at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and an encouraging performance in defeat to world No 1 Iga Swiatek.

But it follows a pattern that has continued from her junior days, with Raducanu, who is up to 11 in the world rankings, switching coaches frequently.

The 19-year-old, who continues her clay-court baptism in Madrid this week, will lean on the Lawn Tennis Association in the short term.

Barry Cowan has defended Raducanu's decision to split with her coach Beltz after only five months with the German

Tennis commentator Barry Cowan has defended Raducanu's decision to split with Beltz, telling Sky Sports: "Emma and her father and the people around her probably feel that maybe Torben was not bringing to Emma what they thought he could bring.

"His credentials are second to none. He worked successfully with Kerber. Former Wimbledon champion and former world number one, but sometimes dynamics don't work.

"I will say, if it isn't working, it's better to act now. You don't want it to drift for a year or two so you can look at it with the glass half full. If you're looking at the glass half empty, that is three coaches since Wimbledon and that I think for me would be the real concern.

"This year is not about Emma's ranking. This year is about Emma improving as a tennis player, also improving physically, and putting herself in a position when her ranking is going to be affected.

"It's not about her ranking, it's about her improving as a player and in two years' time, which is probably what I see as a realistic time frame, of her then being able to really establish herself at the top of the women's game in being able to be competitive more of less week-in, week-out, winning big tournaments.

"I feel confident when I look at her poise on court, her natural timing, her natural athletic ability. That is someone who is very, very special. But the very best players are the ones who are able to get everything working together for them to be able to play their best tennis on a consistent basis."
