A total of 17 people were charged with impaired driving over the weekend, five of them after being involved in collisions, the Ottawa Police Service’s traffic unit said Monday.
The unit called it “another disturbing weekend” for impaired driving, reminding motorists that alcohol and drugs don’t mix with getting behind the wheel.
“Be responsible and always plan a sober ride home,” the unit warned.
Ottawa police said last month that impaired driving charges in 2022 were trending back to pre-pandemic levels.
On average, there was a crash caused by an impaired driver every 1.3 days, police said, threatening the safety of vulnerable road users as more cyclists and e-scooters return, as well as other motorists.
A total of 146 impaired driving charges were made from Jan. 1 to March 30, police said. Fifty-four of those charges had been laid in March, up from 43 in March 2021.
