Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week - Cornwall Seaway News

TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Bank annual meetings

The annual shareholder meetings for Canada’s big banks continue this week with Bank of Montreal holding its gathering on Wednesday and Toronto-Dominion Bank on Thursday. The federal government raised taxes on the country’s big banks and life insurance companies in the budget last week.

Rate decision

The Bank of Canada will release Wednesday its interest rate decision and latest monetary policy report, which will include its outlook for the economic growth and inflation. The C.D. Howe Institute’s monetary policy council has called on the central bank to raise its key interest rate target by half a percentage point to 1.00 per cent.

Cogeco results

Cogeco Inc. and Cogeco Communications Inc. will release their second-quarter results after the close of trading on Wednesday and hold a conference call with financial analysts on Thursday. Cogeco provides internet, video and phone services to 1.6 million residential and business customers in Quebec and Ontario in Canada as well as in 12 states in the United States.

Economic data

Statistics Canada will release its monthly survey of manufacturing and wholesale trade figures for February on Thursday. In a preliminary figure for February last month, Statistics Canada estimated that real gross domestic product for the month grew 0.8 per cent as many of the sectors that were down in January rebounded a month later.

Home sales

The Canadian Real Estate Association is expected to release its March home sales data on Friday. The association reported last month that the national average home price in February climbed by more than 20 per cent compared with a year earlier to hit a record $816,720.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 10, 2022.
