The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 9-2 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League, while Union remained unbeaten at 9-0 and 2-0. Clarkson will face another top-20 team next weekend when the Knights host Rensselaer.
Union rolled out to a 6-0 lead in less than 10 minutes and had the Knights on their heels in the early going, but goals from Sebastian Geiger and Matt Reilly late in the first quarter got Clarkson back on track for the rest of the game. The Knights were back down by six scores five minutes into the second quarter, but again a solid rally had Clarkson closing the gap. Late in the quarter, Matt Reilly found Thomas Fiebich for a goal, drawing Clarkson to within five (11-6) with just a dozen ticks of the clock left in the half. Union would not allow the Knights to draw any momentum, however, scoring with two seconds left to take a six-goal advantage into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Brad Wiley and Connor Holly scored early to pull the Knights within four, but again Union had answers, scoring the next two goals for a 14-8 lead in the first moments of the fourth. Clarkson responded with one of its near-patented fourth quarter runs, as Reilly scored twice and Fiebich added a goal to make it 14-11 with just over three minutes remaining. The hopes of completing the comeback were dashed near the two-minute mark when Union's Clint Goudreau ended three-goal run from Clarkson and put the game away.
Reilly led the Knights with five points on four goals and an assist and both Geiger and Fiebich scored three points with two goals and an assist apiece, while Holly also added three points with a goal and two assists. Matthew Hansen won nine face-offs and scooped up five groundballs and Bryan Penney caused two turnovers while also adding four groundballs, the latter number being matched by Matt Szwagulinski. Jacob Mattice notched 12 saves in the Clarkson crease.
For Union, Hayden Frey (3-4-7), Keaton McCann (3-3-6), and Kieran McGovern (4-1-5) did the heavy lifting for the Dutchmen's offense. Matthew Paolatto won 11 face-offs and snagged seven groundballs and Jake Titus also contributed four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Dan Donahue matched Clarkson's Mattice with 12 saves.
