Lucas Karmiris and Marek Vanacker made history when they became the first players from a 99ers team to be selected in the first round of the OHL draft in the same year.

Karmiris, a Brantford native, was selected 13th overall by the Mississauga Steelheads, while Vanacker, a Delhi native, was taken 23rd overall by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Karmiris was the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario player of the year, after scoring 37 goals and adding 30 assists in 27 regular-season games. During the playoffs, he added eight goals and 14 assists in nine games. The five-foot-10, 170-pound centre was the second player from the Alliance chosen in the draft after Guelph selected London’s Jett Luchanko 12th overall.

Vanacker scored 19 goals and added 26 assists in 23 games. The six-foot, 165-pound forward added eight goals and seven assists in nine playoff games.

Braydon McCallum, also a Delhi native, was the next 99er chosen, picked in the fourth round (69th overall) by the Peterborough Petes. The five-foot-eight, 150-pound forward recorded 22 goals and 26 assists in 27 regular-season games. He added eight goals and nine assists in nine playoff games. He also played four games in the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League playoffs for the Caledonia Corvairs, recording one assist.

Mississauga selected another BMHA player, Gabriel Chiarot, in the seventh round (136th overall). The Hamilton native scored 11 goals and notched 16 assists in 24 games this season. The five-foot-nine, 165-pound forward added five goals and five assists for 10 points in nine playoff games.

Tommy Karmiris, Lucas’ cousin, was the last 99er picked when Kingston selected him in the ninth round (179th overall). Karmiris is also from Brantford.

The five-foot-nine, 180-pound forward recorded 18 goals and 22 assists in 26 games this season. In the playoffs, he added seven goals and eight assists in nine games.

Brantford competed at the OHL Cup last month before losing in the Alliance playoff championship to London.

Michael Misa, an underage player from the Mississauga Senators, was the first player selected in the draft when Saginaw chose him.
