The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has sent home a handful of classes following the identification of COVID-19 cases.

A total of five classrooms were dismissed on Friday, along with three bus cohorts, after five positive cases were reported to the board by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

Two of the cases were from Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School in Amherstburg. Another two were from St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary School in Windsor’s Walkerville area, and one was at Holy Name Catholic Elementary School in Essex. One bus cohort from each school was also dismissed.

“We learned of the confirmed case [Friday] afternoon and have notified the affected students that they are not to attend school when it resumes on Tuesday,” said board spokesman Stephen Fields in an email to WindsorNewsToday.ca “The health unit will notify those students when they are able to return to school.”

The health unit is in the process of notifying anyone at the schools who had been in contact with the confirmed cases and providing them with instructions.

Parents at all three schools should continue self-screening their kids for the virus before leaving for school each morning. All students who are not in an affected class or bus cohort should report to class as usual on Tuesday.

The Catholic board reported nine active cases as of Friday evening, all involving students.

The Greater Essex County District School Board reported one new case on Friday, at Central Public School in Windsor. There were 27 active cases with that board as of Friday evening, plus two staff.
